When it comes to auto repair, it’s important to know what you’re doing. And what you’re getting yourself into. One of our customers learned this the hard way.

The check engine light on his 2006 Dodge Ram turned on and refused to turn off, even though he replaced all oxygen sensors and the exhaust.

As we continued to work on the truck, we learned more pieces of the story. After buying the vehicle online, the customer brought it to another shop and performed some repairs himself.

In addition to putting in the wrong transmission shifter cable, he installed an exhaust system, and placed the catalytic converter on the incorrect side. One of the O2 sensors was spliced, as well.

If you’re buying a used car, you should learn everything about it, including the history and any work that needs to be done.

Pre-purchase inspections can help take away any mysteries that lie behind vehicles you’re interested in.

What do they do during pre-purchase inspections?

Here are our steps for completing a pre-purchase inspection. (More details can be found below.)

  1. Perform a test drive
  2. Check the body
  3. Looks at the suspension
  4. Conduct a wheel alignment check
  5. Make sure buttons are working
  6. Check the climate control system
  7. Look for safety problems
  8. Computer scan

Our pre-purchase inspection process begins with a test drive. During the test drive, we want to make sure the vehicle doesn’t have any shifting problems or brake problems. Our technicians listen for any suspension noises, too.

After the test drive, we check the body of the car and put it on a lift. While it’s lifted, our technicians keep an eye out for rust. They also look for indicators that it was in a flood.

We confirm that nothing is wrong with the suspension system and perform a wheel alignment check.

Inside the vehicle, our technicians make sure every button works, including the windows and hazards. They look at the heating and air conditioning, as well.

Then, we move on to the safety features, such as the condition of seat belts and seeing if the airbag light is on.

A computer scan is also done. During this check, the modules are examined. From there, we can pull codes to further investigate any problems that are reported.

How long does a pre-purchase inspection take?

Pre-purchase inspections are more in-depth than the Virginia State Inspection. They can take anywhere from an hour and a half to 3 hours.

It’s a good idea to call an auto repair shop and schedule pre-purchase inspections in advance.

Is a pre-purchase inspection worth it?

If you are thinking about buying a used vehicle, it’s very important to have a pre-purchase inspection performed by a reliable auto repair shop.

Pre-purchase inspections can point out red flags. For example, when checking the computer you’ll want to make sure the monitors run completely.

Inspections can also tell you if the vehicle has been in an accident, which could be indicated by body or paint damage, or problems with the body panels. The car being in an accident may not be a deal breaker, but it’s nice to know.

Even though all future problems can’t be predicted, the inspection can reveal visible issues, such as bad tires and exhaust conditions, check engine lights and wiring harness problems.

This can help you learn about costs and determine if it’s the right car for you.
