You get into your vehicle, and the interior lights come on. You put your key in the ignition, and the dashboard lights up. You turn your key a little, but the car won’t start.
“What’s going on?” you might think to yourself as you repeat the last step. A no-start situation can be stressful, especially if you’re in a time crunch.
There are many possibilities behind this problem.
Car no-start causes
A few reasons why a car won’t start include:

- Dead battery: It could be a problem with your battery. You may have enough battery to turn some lights or accessories on, but you don’t have enough to turn your car on. Battery failure can occur for several reasons, including corrosion and drastic changes in temperature.
- Transmission sensor: Some vehicles may experience a no-start condition because of a bad neutral safety switch, which is found in the transmission. There might also be a gear shifter problem where something isn’t lining up right on the PRNDL. You may want to make sure the vehicle is in park or neutral before starting it.
- Anti-theft system: Another reason a car won’t start is if the anti-theft system is activated. Even though you use the key for the car, it can actually prevent the vehicle from starting. One indication that this is the problem is if the security light is flashing while the ignition is on. Also, most keys have some type of chip or transmitter that the car receives, and it’s not uncommon for them to go bad.

Starter: If you turn the ignition or press the ignition start button, and you hear it click but nothing happens, it may be a sign that your starter or starter solenoid is bad. - Fuel system problem: Your vehicle may not turn on if it has a fuel system problem. It could be anything from a clogged fuel filter, a fuel pump not working, or even the fuel tank being empty of gas. Even if the fuel gauge reads that you have fuel, it might not be reading correctly.
Those tend to be the more common reasons why a car won’t start. However, there are other possible sources.
First, let’s explain how your vehicle starts. Your ignition switch goes to your computer and that computer communicates with the starter, spark plugs and throttle body.
The starter will engage with the flywheel (or flex plate). It will turn the flywheel, which turns the engine. Then, the engine will release fuel and air, and the computer will tell the ignition coils to send power to the spark plugs.
If there’s a problem with any of these components, it would lead to a running condition and could eventually cause a no-start.
What to do if your car won’t start
If your car won’t start after multiple attempts, you can try reaching out to a nearby auto repair shop.
They might be able to walk you through some steps that could get your vehicle started long enough for you to get it to an automotive expert. Having your car towed is an option if nothing seems to be working.
The autoshop can also start gathering information about when this problem is occurring and – if you’ve been there before – look at your vehicle’s history to see if it’s time to replace a part.
