Pinewood Derby workshop held for scouts at Steve’s Auto Repair

Cub Scout Pack 1373 in Dale City is off to the races.

Members of the pack participated in a Pinewood Derby workshop on Saturday. It was held at Steve’s Auto Repair & Tire, which is located at 2603 Hanco Center Drive in Woodbridge.

The repair shop began hosting the event a few years ago when its owners learned that some scouts and parents don’t have access to needed tools.

“We saw there was a need that we are able to meet,” Owner Scott Whitling explained. “The scouts are great organizations for youth, and we are happy to help them out in this way.”

How our Pinewood Derby workshop got started

Steve’s Auto Repair has been supporting the pinewood derbies since 2014.

For many years – even before the scouts were combined – we have seen girls building cars along with their brothers. The cub scouts had a sibling part of the Pinewood Derby, which enabled girls to participate. It has been really cool to see that.

The Pinewood Derby workshop is one way our auto repair shop gives back to the community. Steve’s Auto Repair supports various non-profits, including scouting, the Prince William County/Manassas Boys & Girls Club, and The Salvation Army.

We have learned that many scout packs have delayed their Pinewood Derby to May, due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Any scout packs that need a place to build pinewood derby cars may reach out to Steve’s Auto Repair at (703) 670-8005.

It’s almost race day for area scouts.

Steve’s Auto Repair & Tire held a Pinewood Derby workshop for Cub Scout Pack 1373 in Dale City and Cub Scout Pack 501 in Woodbridge on Saturday.

During the annual event, kids and their families created pinewood derby cars that will be used in a competition on January 25.

The Pinewood Derby is beginning at 5 p.m. at Prince of Peace United Methodist Church, 6299 Token Forest Drive in Manassas.

Tools, space needed to make pinewood derby cars

Steve’s Auto Repair & Tire has been participating with pinewood derbies — through sponsorships and workshops — since 2014.

We believe that the scouting program is a very good program to support in the community. We started by sponsoring pinewood derbies and, over the years, we saw a need for the parents to be able to help their kids build pinewood derby cars. A lot of them live in apartments and townhomes and don’t have the necessary tools.

“One year, we found out that there was a scout that was not able to participate in the pinewood derby because they lived in an apartment and had no tools. That was one of the things we wanted to change — to give everyone an opportunity to participate,” Steve’s Auto Repair & Tire Owner ST Billingsley said. “As we did a little more research, we realized that was a common occurrence.”

Now that the pinewood derbies allow siblings to participate, it’s really fun to see the family building the cars together, including the girls — whether or not the girls are involved in the scouting program.

“We’re here at Steve’s Auto Repair, where he was kind enough to host a workshop for all our scouts,” Cub Scout 1373 Cubmaster Tim Young said. “We’re building pinewood derby cars for our derby.”

Cub Scout Pinewood Derby day at Steve’s Auto Repair and Tire

Steve’s Auto Repair and Tire in Woodbridge Virginia will open their doors to all Boy Scouts and Cub Scout units in the Woodbridge, Dale City, Dumfries, Lake Ridge, and Manassas Areas for Pinewood Derby Day.

For units that want space to build their derby cars or to use some professional tools, Steve’s Auto Repair & Tire is willing to work with Scouts to coordinate weekend derby car building events in Woodbridge.

Packs are able to use special tools provided by Steve’s Auto Repair and Tire and can work with their families to build the cars. Scouts also ge the chance to build or repair their cars in a real-life automotive garage setting, which adds to fun.

By using the space, Scout leaders are also able to practice setting up the race track to make sure it works correctly, without having to pay for extra time at the Prince William school where the derby is held. This helps to make sure there were no glitches on race day.

“We’ve done this before and it was fun for the Cub Scouts, parents, and us. We enjoy doing it for the community and that is why we are expanding the days for the Scouts, to make sure they’re prepared for the Pinewood Derby,” said ST Billingsley owner of Steve’s Auto Repair and Tire.

Setting up a Pinewood Derby Day

Overall it is a great event with lots of fun and hard work for the Scouts. To coordinate a date for units to come to Steve’s for car building, call 703-670-8005.

While there are many ways to build a car for the Pinewood Derby, there are standard rules all Scouts must follow – either set by NCAC‘s Boy Scout District Director or the individual units.

Steve’s Auto Repair & Tire hosted Cub Scout Pack 1189’s unit Pinewood Derby again this year.

The pack, based out of Montclair, hosts their own unit competition each year. This year the competition was hosted at the John F. Pattie Elementary School in Woodbridge.

Our support of the cub scout event

Steve’s Auto has sponsored the event for many years, as part of our community outreach, and brought along 50 pizzas from Aroma Pizza to feed the unit.

“We like being able to support our community in this way, and it’s a lot of fun watching the kids race their cars,” said Scott Whitling, co-owner at Steve’s Auto.

Parents and their Scouts gathered together for the Pinewood Derby at John F. Pattie Elementary School.

Whitling was given the honor of starting the races off in the school’s gymnasium.

“It was great being able to see all of the parents and their Scouts out at the event,” said Whitling.

The winners of each of the unit competitions move on to the Occoquan Boy Scout’s District-wide Pinewood Derby, which is scheduled this year for March 12.
