In Boy Scouts, Community Involvement, Pinewood Derby by Steves Auto Repair and Tire

Dale City scouts gained hands-on experience at Steve’s Auto Repair.

Members of Cub Scout Pack 1373 participated in a Pinewood Derby Building Day.

We hosted the program at our Woodbridge auto repair shop, 2603 Hanco Center Drive, on January 20.

This annual tradition provides scouts and their families access to the space and tools they need to make pinewood derby cars.

The scouts, ranging from kindergarten through fifth-grade, were responsible for designing and painting their vehicles. Adults provided help and guidance, as needed.

Our Pinewood Derby Building Day and community support

Steve’s Auto Repair started sponsoring local pinewood derbies in 2013. It held its first Pinewood Derby Building Day a few years later.

“We look forward to this event each year,” Steve’s Auto Repair Owner Scott Whitling said. “It’s great seeing the kids prepare for the races. Plus, we’re able to support an organization that’s helping them learn valuable skills.”

Scout groups that would like to set up pinewood derby building days can call Steve’s Auto Repair at (703) 670-8005 and ask for Scott.

Local girl scouts are about to go head-to-head with their peers.

A Powderpuff pinewood derby is expected to take place on Saturday. Steve’s Auto Repair recently helped members of Girl Scout Troop 02372 prepare for the upcoming races.

We hosted our first pinewood derby workshop for girl scouts.

On April 29, more than 15 youth participated in the event that was held at our Woodbridge auto repair shop.

Dremels, belt sanders, and band saws were used to shape pieces of wood into Pinewood Derby cars.

Supporting scouts for 10 years

Steve’s Auto Repair has been supporting pinewood derby programs for 10 years. We started by sponsoring competitions. This transitioned into pinewood derby workshops when our owners realized that a lot of scouts lack the tools and space to make pinewood derby cars.

In previous years, our autoshop has held these events for local cub scouts. In February, we received an email from a parent whose daughter is in Girl Scout Troop 02372. His son had participated in one of our Pinewood Derby workshops.

“Supporting our community is very important to us, and hosting these workshops is one way we can do that,” Steve’s Auto Repair Owner Scott Whitling said. “We appreciate the opportunity to help troop members create cars so they can take part in the upcoming race.”

Based out of the Coles District, Girl Scout Troop 02372 is made up of sixth, seventh and eighth-grade students.

About 20 scouts participated in the Pinewood Derby workshop. Through this event, the kids were able to create pinewood derby cars, with help from parents.

These wooden vehicles were designed using a pattern and various tools, including belt sanders, a band saw, and a Dremel tool. Holes were drilled to add weights and the wheels. The participants even had a chance to paint their automobile.

“For me, it’s fun seeing the kids here build the cars with their parents,” Steve’s Auto Repair Co-Owner Scott Whitling said. “We’re glad that we are able to provide scouts with the tools and space they need to complete their projects.”

Pinewood Derby events are enjoyed by many local scouts.

To provide youth with the opportunity to participate, Steve’s Auto Repair & Tire is opening up its building and offering needed equipment to scout groups.

This annual tradition started several years ago, and our support of the derbies extends back to 2014.

“We’ve been running Pinewood Derby workshops for many years and enjoy helping out the scouts in this way,” Steve’s Auto Repair & Tire Owner Scott Whitling said.

Our shop is located at 2603 Hanco Center Drive. Any scout packs that would like to set up Pinewood Derby workshops should call Steve’s Auto Repair at (703) 670-8005 and ask for Scott Whitling, or email scott.whitling@stevesautorepairva.com.
