Scouts work on Pinewood Derby cars at Steve’s Auto Repair

It’s almost race day for area scouts.

Steve’s Auto Repair & Tire held a Pinewood Derby workshop for Cub Scout Pack 1373 in Dale City and Cub Scout Pack 501 in Woodbridge on Saturday.

During the annual event, kids and their families created wooden cars that will be used in a competition on January 25.

The Pinewood Derby is beginning at 5 p.m. at Prince of Peace United Methodist Church, 6299 Token Forest Drive in Manassas.

Steve’s Auto Repair & Tire has been participating with pinewood derbies — through sponsorships and workshops — since 2014.

We believe that the scouting program is a very good program to support in the community. We started by sponsoring pinewood derbies and, over the years, we saw a need for the parents to be able to help their kids build pinewood derby cars. A lot of them live in apartments and townhomes and don’t have the necessary tools.

“One year, we found out that there was a scout that was not able to participate in the pinewood derby because they lived in an apartment and had no tools. That was one of the things we wanted to change — to give everyone an opportunity to participate,” Steve’s Auto Repair & Tire Owner ST Billingsley said. “As we did a little more research, we realized that was a common occurrence.”

Now that the pinewood derbies allow siblings to participate, it’s really fun to see the family building the cars together, including the girls — whether or not the girls are involved in the scouting program.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Steve’s Auto Repair

In Boy Scouts, Boys and Girls Club, Community Involvementby Steves Auto Repair and Tire

We’d like to thank everybody who came to have their vehicle serviced at Steve’s Auto Repair & Tire. Thank you for trusting us in servicing your vehicles.

We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

One of the things that we are proud of, this year, is being able to give back to the community through various organizations, including the Boys & Girls Club.

We have been able to provide the Boys & Girls Clubs with free oil changes and inspections, which allows us to do a safety check on those vehicles every time they come in. This helps keep them on the road and makes sure the kids have a safe place to go.

In our support of What’s Up Prince William, we’ve been able to talk about the good things going on in our community and talk about other non-profits that would not normally have a voice or a place to share their information.

Along with another auto repair shop, we were able to do more than $64,000 of in-kind services through What’s Up Prince William.

As part of our community support, we’re getting ready to host the Cub Scout Pinewood Derby workshop. The program allows families and the pack to come in and work on the cars together.

Knowing that a lot of people live in apartments and town homes or may not have the necessary tools, for many years we have opened up our shop to allow the parents and kids to work on those projects.

Steve’s Auto Repair & Tire was filled with the sounds and smells of wood being cut on Saturday.

Members of Cub Scout Pack 1373 in Dale City and Cub Scout Pack 501 in Woodbridge prepared for an upcoming competition at the Woodbridge-based business.

“We’re here at Steve’s Auto Repair, where he was kind enough to host a workshop for all our scouts,” Cub Scout 1373 Cubmaster Tim Young said. “We’re building pinewood derby cars for our derby.”

The auto repair shop is sponsoring the Pinewood Derby, which is scheduled for January 26.

It run from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Prince of Peace United Methodist Church in Manassas.

“This is what we like to do to give back to our community,” Steve’s Auto Repair & Tire Owner Scott Whitling said.

Dale City Cub Scout Pack 1189 took Steve’s up on their offer to provide space and tools for the Scouts to create their cars for the annual Pinewood Derby.

Each year, Scouts from all over the Occoquan district compete in the Pinewood Derby, racing cars that they’ve made with their units.

Around 50 Scouts and troop leaders gathered at Steve’s over the weekend to create their derby cars.

“It was about helping the kids get their cars cut out, using the tools we provided. The Cub Scout Pack Leaders came in and worked with the kids to get the cars cut out,” said Steve’s owner Scott Whitling.

Steve’s purchased equipment to help the Scouts make their cars and opened up the shop on the weekend to give them space for the project.

“I like it. What was cool was how the kids and parents appreciated us providing this for them. Because they actually came looking for me when they finished, to thank us for helping them out,” said Whitling.

At the end of the day, all of the Scouts came together to clean up the shop and took on leadership roles.

Steve’s plans on doing this again for the Boy Scouts and hopes they can help other units.

Pinewood Derby Day at Steve’s Auto Repair and Tire

Steve’s Auto Repair and Tire in Woodbridge Virginia will open their doors to all Boy Scouts and Cub Scout units in the Woodbridge, Dale City, Dumfries, Lake Ridge, and Manassas Areas for Pinewood Derby Car Building Day.

For units that want space to build their derby cars or to use some professional tools, Steve’s Auto Repair & Tire is willing to work with Scouts to coordinate weekend derby car building events in Woodbridge.

Packs are able to use special tools provided by Steve’s Auto Repair and Tire and can work with their families to build the cars. Scouts also ge the chance to build or repair their cars in a real-life automotive garage setting, which adds to fun.

By using the space, Scout leaders are also able to practice setting up the race track to make sure it works correctly, without having to pay for extra time at the Prince William school where the derby is held. This helps to make sure there were no glitches on race day.

“We’ve done this before and it was fun for the Cub Scouts, parents, and us. We enjoy doing it for the community and that is why we are expanding the days for the Scouts, to make sure they’re prepared for the Pinewood Derby,” said ST Billingsley owner of Steve’s Auto Repair and Tire.

Overall it is a great event with lots of fun and hard work for the Scouts. To coordinate a date for units to come to Steve’s for car building, call 703-670-8005.

While there are many ways to build a car for the Pinewood Derby, there are standard rules all Scouts must follow – either set by NCAC‘s Boy Scout District Director or the individual units.
